My wife thought I was crazy when I told her I was going to buy coffee online. "Look!" she said,"I can just pick some up when I'm at the grocery store today. What's the big deal?"At first she didn't get it. I explained to her that there was nothing odd about buying coffee on the internet. After all, you can buy almost anything online these days, from airplanes to yachts and everything in between.
There are more varieties of coffee online than in your neighborhood store. It doesn't matter what neighborhood you live in. You can get coffee from anywhere in the world you choose, all from the comfort of your own home.
Let's be honest. Grocery store coffee is nothing to write home about. For the most part, grocery stores carry plain-Jane coffee. These stores have low markup, therefore they need to move their product fast. Coffee that moves the fastest is coffee that appeals to the lowest common denominator. So don't expect a wonderful gourmet experience when you buy your coffee from a grocery store.
Specialty companies know coffee best. You're going to get a more satisfying experience and a higher-quality coffee when you buy from a coffee merchant. Usually these are small, owner operated businesses, run by people who have a strong passion for their craft. These people have the skill and the knowledge, because coffee is there one and only business.
My mother always used to say, you get what you pay for. It's no different when you buy coffee. Count yourself lucky, if you ever find cheap coffee that doesn't taste like cardboard. By the way, where do you think that bargain coffee ends up going? You got it, right down your kitchen drain! Suddenly that cheap coffee isn't so inexpensive anymore.
In reality, the majority of people don't have a good place close at hand to buy gourmet coffee beans. If you don't live in a large metropolitan area, you are most likely out of luck. Those who do live in the city aren't necessarily better off. Fighting traffic and wasting time driving halfway across town is not anybody's idea of a fun time. Buying coffee online is simpler, easier and much more fun.
